2012 Field Book Syrah

We are very excited to present the 2012 vintage of Field Book, our special Northern Rhone-style Syrah crafted exclusively for members of our Top Spott! and Spott On! Club members. The name Field Book reflects the exhaustive search and notes recorded as we sought a stellar vineyard site perfectly suited to the growing of Syrah. We sourced our grapes again this year from Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, which is situated on a windswept hill in the Petaluma Gap in the southernmost part of the Sonoma Coast appellation. This 22-acre vineyard site is influenced by early morning fog coming off the San Francisco Bay, followed by warm sun exposure and late-afternoon wind. The moderate growing season here produces intensely flavored wines that are deeply colored, full-bodied, with mouth-filling tannins, a silky texture, and natural, fresh acidity. This represents our third year of working with vineyard founders Joan and Jim Griffin and we continue to appreciate their attention to detail and their commitment to sustainable, organically driven farming practices. Field Book is produced in extremely limited quantities—only 179 cases are available for the 2012 vintage!

This year’s Field Book is a genuine expression of the Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, displaying Spottswoode’s trademark elegance and structure. Four Syrah clones and Viognier are sourced from the site and co-fermented in concrete tanks, producing a classic, cool-climate Northern Rhone-style Syrah produced with a California perspective. The 2012 is a perfect reflection of the vintage and extremely expressive. It is marked by delicate floral aromas of apricot, white peach and graphite, while the green cherry, black cherry, blackberry, and smoke fill the mouth and nose. Vibrant acidity contributes a linear focus and adds to the length and clarity of this wine, while the tannin backbone and viscous density build on the palate. The silky tannins pair beautifully with the vibrant fruit flavors and crushed rock minerality, that all contribute to a wine that is dense, energetic, and evolving.
