2008 Field Book “Rhone”
We are thrilled to introduce you to our second vintage of Field Book, our Rhone style wine which we reserve only for members of our SPOTT ON! Club. We crafted only 145 cases of this wine and—as with last year’s inaugural vintage—we only wish we had more to share!
In our quest to continuously challenge and educate ourselves, we pursued our love for Syrah and Grenache in 2007 by creating Field Book, which is named to reflect the detailed notes we recorded as we explored many California vineyards in search of a stellar Rhone varietal site. On our journey we chanced upon the Terra Bella Vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles, an isolated property steeply situated at 1800 feet above sea level that is exposed to Pacific coastal winds channeled through the Templeton Gap. This rugged terroir has a unique expression and the ability to captivate and fuel our intellectual curiosity while allowing us to hone our winemaking skills.
Crafted by Spottswoode to our exacting standards and displaying our trademark elegance and structure, the 2008 Field Book elicits the following thoughts from winemaker Jennifer Williams:
Nose: Complex, dark and jammy fruit aromas are highlighted by fresh sweet black cherries. Clove and spices, with delicate hints of black pepper. Earthy notes mingle with exotic white flowers.
Palate: Creamy, softly textured with fine-grained tannins. A youthful beauty that’s ripe and balanced. Black cherry, wild blackberries in late summer; a subtle vein of minerality. Judicious use of new oak offers a sweet, delicately spicy palate: clove and anise. A touch of fresh ground espresso beans and cocoa on the finish. Sweet and enjoyable.
Thank you for joining us on our Rhone expedition!
