2007 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet

Potentially even better (than the 2006), the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon may well be the finest Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted from Spottswoode. Blended with 3% Cabernet Franc, the production is small (only 2,000 cases compared to the 2,900 cases produced in 2006). This opulent wine offers up loads of blue and black fruits intermixed with licorice, a hint of lead pencil shavings, and of course, the telltale floral notes that seen to be a part of this estate vineyard. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, but seamless, rather exuberant and flashy by Spottswoode’s standards, but so pure, deep, and rich, one gets the impression that if Château Margaux were making Cabernet Sauvignon in St. Helena, it might well taste like this. There is virtually no noticeable oak, given the extravagant richness of the wine, and the balance and elegance are combined with the sensational texture, power, and length, are awesome. This should be a historic Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 30+ years. 99 points (December, 2009)

It’s not merely perfect balance or complexity; there’s a gestalt that takes over, like a Bat-Signal for deliciousness. That’s what happened on my first encounter with Spottswoode’s remarkable 2007. Its opulent profile had just the right accents: soft paprika scents; cedar shaving; a coffee hint at the end. But it was more the sense of grace; every flavor, every aroma fell precisely into place.
