harvest reports

Harvest 2007

In retrospect, 2007 was like a Mediterranean vacation. The weather was so mild I felt like I was back home in sunny San Diego with its warm, dry winters and long, balmy summers. I think the vines felt it too.

Our moderate winter led to an early spring which championed an equally early budbreak, bloom and set in our Estate Vineyard. With less soil moisture, our grapevines created smaller canopies, smaller berries, and lighter cluster weights—our overall tonnage fell nearly 20% below average.

Despite a heat spell in late August, September’s temperate weather and light rain turned a potentially early harvest into one that was right on time. We believe the cosmos will make up for lower quantity with exceptional quality—the young wines are already showing incredible concentration!

Many thanks to Aron Weinkauf, our Assistant Winemaker, Jose Luis Lopez and his dedicated crew, as well as our diligent South African intern, MP Botes.
