estate cabernet sauvignon
2008 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2008 growing season began with an unusually cold, dry spring which kept the soil temperatures cool late into the spring season. The result was later-than-normal flowering and bud break, and smaller-than-normal vine canopies with small clusters and berries. After a relatively normal summer, a long heat event over Labor Day quickly brought on the beginning of harvest. We harvested each block in separate passes to single out the best fruit, and our meticulous selection in the vineyard combined with our fruit sorting in the winery gave us a small amount of beautiful fruit with which to work.
The 2008 has an absolutely beautiful, full nose of black fruits (boysenberry and blackberry) with notes of camphor, clove, and cedar. Wonderful ripe tannins, with hints of graphite and warm fireplace ash. Great length. Beautifully knitted, this complex, multi-layered wine showcases the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at its best.
